Lightning protection design

What is lightning protection?

Lightning protection has existed since the middle of the eighteenth century with the introduction of The Franklin Rod (1749 – Benjamin Franklin). Although still very much in use today on modern external lightning protection systems, The Franklin Rod is now commonly used in conjunction with a meshed conductor system based on the principals of the Faraday Cage (1836 - Michael Faraday). By installing a system based upon these joint principals a low resistance path to earth is created, allowing the lightning current to pass safely to earth and minimising any structural damage to the building.

Lightning protection systems usually consist of:

  • Air termination system
  • Down conductor network
  • The earthing system
  • Equipotential bonding
  • Surge protection

Modern construction techniques and materials often offer suitable alternatives to external conductor systems, reducing installation and maintenance costs by utilising the conductive properties of a structures metal clad roof or structural steel frame.

Lightning protection design

The requirements and options available when it comes to designing a lightning protection system vary from building to building and can be complex. One thing that doesn't vary however, is the need to protect not only the structure, but also the electrical/electronic equipment. The lightning protection system will effectively conduct the lightning charge to earth, but part of the charge can still damage electrical installations, unless they are protected by a surge protection device.

Lightning protection installation

At Strike Lightning Protection Services, our team will undertake a survey/risk assessment for your structure and produce method of work documentation, resulting in a comprehensive lightning protection system designed to suit your requirements.

We also make recommendations on modifications to existing protection systems, in order to gain an enhanced level of protection. All work provided is carried out to meet British Standard BS EN 62305
