Although still very much in use today on modern external lightning protection systems, The Franklin Rod is now commonly used in conjunction with a meshed conductor system based on the principals of the Faraday Cage (1836 - Michael Faraday). By installing a system based upon these joint principals a low resistance path to earth is created, allowing the lightning current to pass safely to earth and minimising any structural damage to the building.
